Four Fatal Highway Accidents Within Week
OCCUR IN WIDELY SEPARATED COMMUNITIES OF U. 8. AND CANADA
Reports have been received here of at least four fatal highway accidents occurring in Mennonite communities of the U. S. and Canada within about one week.
In a two-car crash at an intersection south of LaGrange, Ind., on Aug. 31, John Mast. Sr., 82, was fatally injured and seven others suffered varying degrees of injury. Funeral services for Bro. Mast, a member of the Amish church, were held at the home of his son, David J. Mast, near Middlebury, on Sept. 2.
The other occupants of the car were Noah S. Chupp, Mr. and Mrs. Enos I. Bontrager, and Mr. and Mrs. Crist M. Miller. The most seriously injured was Mr. Bontrager, who had several fractured vertebrae. In the other car were Mrs. Polly Miller and daughter Ida, both of whom suffered fractures.
In Elkhart county, Ind., Joe Hochstetler, 25, son of John C. Hochstetler of Nappanee, was almost instantly killed when his car went out of control and turned over several times after going over a railroad crossing. He and his companion, Harley M. Mast, who was not seriously hurt, were returning home from a wedding where Joe had served as one of the witnesses. Funeral services took place Sept. 4 at the Burkholder church, Nappanee.
Funeral services were held at the Metamora, Ill. Mennonite church Sept. 3 for Virgil Bachman, 26, at Low Point, Ill., son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Bachman. He was riding with Dean Robinson of Metamora when their car collided head-on with a semitrailer truck. Mr. Robinson was critically injured. Besides his parents, Virgil leaves his wife, the former Catherine Ring.
Isaac Dyck, 71, who had only recently moved from Altona, Manitoba to Winnipeg, was fatally injured in the latter city on Aug. 25 when hit by the front edge of a truck body. He suffered a fractured skull and passed away the following Monday at the Winnipeg General hospital. Funeral services were held Sept 1 at the Bergthaler church, Altona.
