JOHN BACHMAN

John Bachman, a son of Joseph and Elizabeth Schlabach Bachman, was born near Metamora, Ill. on Dec. 16, 1889, and died on Feb. 7, 1972, at the Eureka Hospital at the age of 82 years.

He was married to Mary Bachman on Sept. 12, 1915. She passed away April 22, 1935. He married Mattie Reeser Bachman on Aug. 1, 1940.

In youth he united with the Metamora Mennonite church and served his church faithfully. He was a Sunday school teacher for 50 years and served many years as an Illinois Mission Board representative. He also served on the board of Maple Lawn Homes for 20 years.

He was engaged in farming in the Lowpoint and Metamora areas until 16 years ago when they moved to Metamora. As his hobby in his retirement years he worked with wood and recently completed crafting his ninth grandmother clock. The Bachmans moved to a retirement cottage at Maple Lawn Home, Eureka, one year ago.

Surviving are his widow; four sons, Richard and John Jr., both of Lowpoint, Allan of Putnam, and Paul of Metamora; a daughter, Mrs. Eldon (Eileen) Schertz of Lowpoint; a stepson, Russell Bachman of Metamora; three stepdaughters, Mrs. John (Minerva) Reeb and Mrs. Eugene (Orpha) Schertz, both of Metamora, and Mrs. Ruth Gross of East Peoria; 53 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and a brother, Harry, of Metamora.

His quiet disposition, Christian testimony, and spiritual concern for his children and grandchildren will be long remembered.

The memorial service was held at Metamora Mennonite church on Feb. 9, in charge of Robert Harnish and James Detweiler. Interment was in Stewart-Harmony Cemetery.
