Two longtime members died Aug. 20. . . . Dale Bachman was 77. He is survived by his wife, Elda; sons John, Marvin and Ernie; a daughter Ruth Beachey; and nine grandchildren.

DALE BACHMAN

Dale Bachman was born April 6, 1920, to Ernest and Prisca Krehbiel. [sic] In his youth, the family lived on various rented farms in the Moundridge area. Dale was baptized on his confession of faith at Garden Township Mennonite Church. In 1942, when the family moved west of Newton, they joined First Mennonite Church. After graduating from Moundridge High School, Dale attended Bethel College for one year until he had to return home because of his father's illness. During World War II, Dale was deferred to the farm.

Dale and Elda Bachman of Newton were married June 7, 1946, at First Mennonite Church of Newton. Leaving the Bethel College farm in 1956, they moved to Newton, where Dale was employed as maintenance engineer for 20 years until he was asked to serve in the same capacity at Bethel Deaconess Hospital for 11 years. People often said, "Dale can fix anything." He also carried on Dale's Electric Service in his garage shop.

He was committed to service in the church, where he was a deacon, trustee, Sunday school superintendent, sound technician, choir member and chairman of the caring committee. He enjoyed serving on the Camp Mennoscah board. The Mennonite Central Committee sale board and Western District Men were also important to him, as well as volunteering at Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, Ind., while Elda took a summer class. The Abraham and Sarah venture also challenged them in Oklahoma City. Reading through the Bible each year had priority. He died Aug. 20, 1997.

Surviving are his wife, Elda; three sons, John and wife Pam of Lone Jack, Mo., Marvin and wife Teresa of Newton and Ernie and wife Paula of Boise, Idaho; a daughter, Ruth and husband Will Beachey of Bismarck, N. D.; 10 grandchildren; a brother, Donovan of Hesston; and three sisters, Florene Wiens and Kathryn Penner, both of Newton, and Elaine Goertzen of Goessel.
