"Neighbors Use 38 Tractors To Aid Newton Farm Family"

MORE THAN 60 neighbors and friends gathered Saturday for an old-fashioned work bee on the farm of the late Walter Andres southeast of Newton.

But there was nothing old-fashioned in the way they carried out the project.

Thirty-eight tractors swarmed over the farm. Attached to them were 20 manure spreaders, eight loaders and ten plows.

Operating together, the plows broke a 50-ft.-wide swath and finished 75 acres in less than a working day. Four tractors pulling disks returned on Monday and went over the entire area in two and a half hours. Among other jobs workers on the farmyard built two complete fences.

LADIES OF THE community brought in food and served a hearty noon meal on both Saturday and Monday.

Two neighbors, Harold Dyck and John Philips, were among the main organizers of the event. Harold Andres, brother of the late Mr. Andres, and Gus Regier helped supervise the activities. A large contingent of workers came from the First Mennonite Church of Newton.

Andres, 48, died suddenly March 5, leaving his widow, Elda, and four children.
