— Miss Katie H. Andres, 63, died June 28 at Bethel Deaconess Hospital, having suffered a stroke of paralysis some weeks ago. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the First Mennonite Church, Rev. Arnold Epp and Rev. J. E. Entz officiating. Miss Andres was a former school teacher and served as librarian of the Mennonite Biblical Seminary for some years while it was located in Chicago. She was employed as secretary of the First Mennonite Church until she became ill. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. G. P. Regier, Mrs. B. C. Regier and Miss Elizabeth Andres, and one brother, H. J. Andres, all of the Newton vicinity.

KATIE HELEN ANDRES

Our sister Katie was born on a farm near Newton, Kansas on Jan. 29, 1898. She had the privilege of growing to adulthood among seven brothers and sisters. Our parents were Gustav and Anna Neufeldt Andres.

Through a confession of faith in Christ and baptism by the Elder Jacob Toews, she became a member of the First Mennonite Church, Newton. The church was a chief interest in her life and it was a deep satisfaction to her to be able to serve her home church as secretary to the pastor for the last six years.

Her major interests prior to these past six years were in the field of Education and Library Science. She was a graduate of Bethel College and Emporia State Teachers' College. After some years of teaching in the public school system, she completed a course in Library Science and enthusiastically answered the call of Dr. Abraham Warkentin to serve as librarian in the first years of Mennonite Biblical Seminary. Her association with the seminary staff and student body greatly enriched her life. The seminary work and it's influence in our conference remained of vital interest to her.

A concern of Katie's was the fast growing Andres family. Each one's birthday was carefully recorded by her and in the years away from Newton, the small ones received their birthday card signed “From Aunt Katie.” Family picnics and celebrations were often inaugurated by her. Her last ventures along this line were a Christmas party for the children and, on her last birthday, she entertained the nephews and nieces. On such occasions she often set out the projector and showed her slides, accumulated from travel. Among her slides is also a series which includes each Andres family unit, taken in home settings.

After three months of illness, the Lord called her home to her eternal rest on June 28, 1961. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Arnold Epp assisted by Rev. J. E. Entz. She was laid to rest in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Remembering Katie are her three sisters, Elisabeth of the home, Mrs. G. P. Regier and family, Mrs. B. C. Regier and family, her sister-in-law Mrs. P. C. Andres and family, the large circle of nephews and nieces, and her many other relatives and friends.
