Frieda (van der Smissen) Andreas, 94, of North Newton, a teacher and dietician, died April 22 in Newton. Funeral services were held April 26 at Bethel College Mennonite Church, North Newton, with Darrel Fast officiating. Burial and graveside services were held April 27 at First Mennonite Cemetery, Beatrice, Neb. A native of Summerfield, Ill., she helped organize a home economics department at Bethel College, along with planning the dining hall and managing and purchasing, preparation and serving of food. In 1920 she moved to Berne, Ind., to help her family and ailing mother and to teach at Berne High School. In 1922 she traveled to Beatrice, Neb., to stay with an infirm aunt and to teach at the Mennonite Academy. She later served as a dietician at Bethel Deaconess Hospital, Newton, for 5½ years, retiring in 1959. She also taught continuing education at Bethel College and later moved to Kidron Bethel Retirement Community. Survivors include two sons, Paul W. of Fall River and Carl R. of Burlington, Vt.; three sisters, Elizabeth Clemmer of Wolcottville, Ind., Edna Cowsert of Junction, Texas, and Ruth Johnson of Indianpolis; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Her husband, William C., died in 1951.
