Accidents Claim Lives of Two in Ind. Community

TRAGEDIES ONLY 14 HOURS APART AT NAPPANEE

Nappanee, Ind. — Tragedy and sorrow bore down upon this community suddenly the week of March 5 as four deaths were recorded within the week, two of them accidental.

On Tuesday afternoon, March 14, funeral services were held at the North Main Street Mennonite church here for Milo E. Hochstetler, 41, who was instantly killed the evening of March 10 when his light truck was hit by a backing freight train at a little used crossing near here. He was en route to the homes of relatives to inform them of the death of his step-father, David J. Miller of LaGrange.

Highway Crash

Wednesday afternoon services were held at the same church for Mrs. Simon J. Yoder, 51, who was killed instantly in a car accident on Route 19 north of here March 11, only 14 hours after the Hochstetler tragedy.

Her two daughters, Laura Mae 16 and Dorothy 13 suffered severe fractures in the same accident and are confined to Elkhart General hospital. Mr. Yoder was not seriously injured. Two other daughters, Esther of Glendale, Calif. and Sylvia of Hesston college, came here for their mother’s funeral.

Other deaths here during the week were those of Mrs. Levi Schrock, 74, on March 7, and her brother-in-law, Jacob Holaway, 82, on the following day. Mrs. Schrock was a member of the First Mennonite church and Mr. Holaway, of the North Main Street church.
