21-Year Old Iowa Youth One of Three Killed in Crash

Wayland, Iowa. — Funeral services were held at the Washington (Iowa) Mennonite Church on Nov. 14 for Philip Dean Roth, 21, who died in a highway crash the evening of Nov. 11. He was the son of Rev. and Mrs. Vernon Roth of rural Washington.

The two-car crash on Interstate 80 near Amana also claimed the lives of Dr. John Peterson, 55, of Hartley and his wife Neva, occupants of the other car. Laura Blosser, a passenger in the car driven by Philip, was seriously injured but is recovering.

Officers reported that the car driven by young Roth for some reason crossed the grass median strip on the Interstate and crashed into the Peterson auto.

Philip Roth was a graduate of Washington schools and had attended Bethel College in Kansas. He had been working on the family farm with his father. He was much interested in youth work and was president of the Mennonite Youth Fellowship of the Washington Church.

Surviving in addition to the parents are three sisters, Marcia of the home, Mrs. Roger Roth of rural Mt. Pleasant, and Rebecca of Kirksville, Mo.; three brothers, James of Grand Island, Neb., Lowell of Hesston, Kan., and Stanley of Dallas, Tex.; and grandmother, Mrs. Mabel Kauffman of Hesston.
