Retired Minister Suffers Fatal Attack At Winona Lake

Goshen, Ind. — Rev. J. D. Hartzler, 85, retired minister of the Waldo Mennonite Church at Flanagan, Ill., suffered a fatal heart attack Aug. 17 while attending a Bible conference at Winona lake.

The body was brought to the Hartzler-Gutermuth Funeral Home in Elkhart and then to Flanagan where the funeral services and burial took place on Aug. 20.

A native of Garden City, Mo., Rev. Hartzler served the Waldo congregation for over 40 years.

Survivors include sons Paul of Minonk, Ill. and Floyd of Flanagan; two daughters, Mrs. Lester Litwiller of Carlock, Ill., and Mrs. Ruth Schertz of Bloomington, ill.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two brothers, L. J. of Goshen and Ira of Garden City; and two sisters, Mrs. Mary King of Garden City and Mrs. Anna Eigsti of Buda, Ill.

REV. J. D. HARTZLER

Rev. J. D. Hartzler, 85, of Carlock, Ill., died at 10:30 a.m. Aug 17 while attending the Winona Lake Bible Conference at Warsaw, Ind. Death was due to a massive coronary heart attack.

For the past eight years he resided at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Litwiller, Carlock.

A memorial service was held at the Waldo Mennonite Church near Flanagan, Ill. with Rev. E. J. Stalter, pastor of the Sterling Mennonite Church, and Rev. David Eschleman, pastor of the Waldo Church, officiating. Burial was in the Waldo Cemetery.

He was born Oct. 18, 1884 at Garden City, Mo., a son of Bishop and Mrs. John J. Hartzler. He was married to Emma Mae Schertz on Dec. 3, 1909. She preceded him in death on July 6, 1962.

Surviving are two daughters, Alta, Mrs. Lester Litwiller of Carlock, and Ruth Ann, Mrs. John Schertz of Normal, Ill., two sons, Paul W. of Minonk, Ill. and Floyd A. of Flanagan, Ill., two brothers, L. J. Hartzler of Goshen, Ind. and Ira Hartzler of Garden City, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. William Eigsti of Buda, Ill. and Mrs. Menno King of Garden City, Mo.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Two brothers, one sister and one grandchild preceded him in death.

He was educated in the Garden City, Mo. schools. He was ordained to the ministry in 1920 and named to the office of bishop in the Mennonite Church in 1927. He was pastor of the Waldo Mennonite Church for 37 years and was named pastor emeritus on his retirement. During his ministry he served as moderator of the Illinois Mennonite Conference and as a member of many committees, and also as bishop for the Goodfield congregation, the Chicago Home Mission and the Chicago Spanish Church.

Out-of-state relatives attending the services included Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Hartzler, Louisville, Ky., Mr. and Mrs. Roger Hartzler, South Bend, Ind., Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Hartzler and Janet, Elkhart, Ind., Mr. and Mrs. Roger Cosby and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Hartzler, Indianapolis, Ind.; Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Schrock and Maurice Smith, Garden City, Mo.
