GERHARD SCHMIDT

Gerhard (Gary) Schmidt died in a San Bernardino, Calif. Hospital following an illness of less than a week. Only his immediate family knew he had not been well for some time. On his last Sunday he attended worship services at the First Mennonite Church of Upland, Calif. as usual and took care of the offering, being the church treasurer. In the afternoon he suddenly became very ill and was rushed to a San Bernardino Hospital when emergency surgery revealed a hemorrhage resulting from a performated stomach ulcer. He was called to his eternal Home the following Saturday evening.

He was born near Moundridge, Kansas on Oct. 9, 1886 and had reached the age of 75 years. He came to Upland in 1907 and was a member of the First Mennonite Church here for more than 50 years and the church treasurer for 25 years. In his younger years he was also director of the choir.

Being unmarried he made his home with two sisters, Ella and Linda. Other survivors are three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Horsch of Upland, Mrs. Clara Weber of Cucamonga, and Bertha Schmidt of Garden Grove; one brother Albert of Upland; two nieces and one nephew.

Rev. J. N. Smucker, pastor of the church, officiated at the funeral services held Dec. 26 in the church sanctuary. Entombment followed at the Bellevue Mausoleum at Ontario. Many friends came to pay a last tribute to a member who had served so long and so well.
