17-YEAR-OLD VIRGINIA FARM YOUTH KILLED WHEN TRACTOR OVERTURNS AND CATCHES FIRE
Two traffic accident and a farm tragedy claimed three lives in widely scattered Mennonite communities within recent days, according to reports reaching the Review.
Near Fentress, Va., 17-year-old John W.Yoder was driving a tractor down a lane when it apparently struck a ditch and overturned, throwing him off.
The youth's father, Menno J. Yoder, was working in a field and saw smoke curling up at a distance. Arriving at the scene, he found the overturned tractor in flames and his son dead of either injuries or burns. He was lying with one foot caught under a rear wheel. Spilled gasoline had apparently spread over his clothing.
Funeral services for the youth were held Sept. 11 at the Mt. Pleasant Mennonite Church, of which he was a member.
Elmer J. Amstutz, 68, well-known Kidron, Ohio farmer and part-time employee at the Kidron Auction, was fatally injured Sept. 11 when his car and a stone truck collided on a narrow bridge near there.
Funeral services for Mr. Amstutz were held at the Martins Mennonite Church. Survivors include his wife Etta, one daughter, three sons and nine grandchildren.
Injuries suffered two days earlier when his horse and buggy were struck by an auto proved fatal Sept. 11 to David B. Zook, Amish bishop residing on Route 1, New Holland, Pa.
Bishop Zook was returning home when he apparently failed to see an approaching car at an intersection. Tall corn obscured the view of the car driver, 20-year-old Ivan Martin of Denver.
