Olive Magdalena Bare

Olive M. Bare, 90, passed away Saturday (Aug. 7, 2010). She was born near Oronogo, Mo., on June 2, 1920, to Joseph H. and Ida (Bauer) Bare. Her family moved to Harper in 1924. In 1938, Olive graduated from Harper High School. After attending one year at Hesston College, she taught in one- and two-room schools in Harper and Kingman counties for 16 years. Her teaching career continued at South Breeze Elementary School in Newton from 1955 to 1987. Olive's education included a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Bethel College in North Newton in 1956, and a master's degree in education from Wichita State University in 1970. She was a charter member of the Newton chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Teacher's Sorority, an honorary sorority for women educators, a member of the American Association of University Women and a charter member of the Newton branch of the Association of Childhood Education, and was president of the association for two years. Olive was a member of the Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church in Harper. In 1972, she became a member of the First Mennonite Church in Newton. She is survived by siblings, Olin Bare of Newton and Marcella and husband Bob Diller of Hesston; nieces and nephews, Rosella and Ron Wardell of Bend, Ore., Bonita and Mark Altus of Sheridan, Ore., Lucinda Bare of Portland, Ore., Doyle Bare of Crestline, Calif., Mel and Norma Diller of Hesston, Marlin and Kathy Diller of Avondale, Ariz., DeAnn Diller of Wichita, Rod and Gwen Diller of Goshen, Ind., and Darlene and Chuck Buller of Hesston; great-nieces and nephews, Aaron Diller, Mark and Denise Diller, Amanda and Brett Hudson, J.R. Diller, John Diller, Matt Diller, Craig Buller and Karl Buller; and great-great nephews Kyle and Ryan Diller. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother and sister-in-law, Ivan and Ardis Bare. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. A celebration of life service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Mennonite Church in Newton. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at the Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church cemetery in Harper. Memorials may be made to the Association of Childhood Education, Newton Chapter.
