Retired GC Worker in India Dies at 93

Berne, Ind. — Ella G. Bauman, a resident of Swiss Village and retired General Conference Mennonite Church missionary doctor to India, died May 17 at Jay County Hospital due to complications following a lengthy illness. She was 93.

She was born May 31, 1895, in Versailles, Mo. She married Harvey R. Bauman in July 1924 in Quakertown, Pa. He preceded her in death in 1970.

She graduated from Women’s Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1924. From 1925 to 1961 she served as a doctor at Champa, India.

She returned to the United States in 1961 and served as a medical adviser for 10 summers at Camp Men-O-Lan, Quakertown. She moved to Berne in 1974.

Survivors include a son, Albert of Columbus, Ohio; three daughters, Harvella (Mrs. Robert) Stutzman of Normal, Ill., Elizabeth Ruth (Mrs. Walter) Shelly of Hazard, Ky., and Clara Ann Stauffer of Emmaus, Pa.; 23 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, Kenneth G. Bauman.

Funeral services were held May 20 at First Mennonite Church, Berne. Interment was in West Swamp Mennonite Church Cemetery, Quakertown.
