JOHN P. BARTEL
John P. Bartel passed away early Sunday morning, September 7, 1952. He had been in the Halstead hospital for three weeks at the time of his death.
Mr. Bartel lived his entire life in the Moundridge and Halstead communities. Born on a farm just outside of Moundridge on February 7, 1877, he reached the age of 75 years and seven months. He was the son of Peter and Eva Knels Bartel. In 1944, he together with his daughter Clara, came to live in Halstead, after retiring from the farm where they had made their home for many years. Previously, he had lived two winters with his daughter and son-in-law in Detroit, Michigan.
On October 26, 1909, he was married to Mary Regier. They made their home on the Hege farm where their daughter was born. Mrs. Bartel passed away on March 23, 1916. After the death of his wife, he devoted all his thoughts and bestowed his affection on their only daughter, who was but a child at the time of her mother's death.
He was a member of the Garden Township Mennonite church, being baptized and received into the church by the elder, Rev. Sommers. He kept his membership in this church for the remainder of his life.
Mr. Bartel is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Klein of Detroit, Michigan; one brother, Dave Bartel of Halstead, and one sister, Mrs. Frank Friesen of EIDorado, Kansas; and many other relatives. His parents, four brothers and five sisters, in addition to his wife have preceded him in death. In the passing of Mr. Bartel the community will miss a man who had grown with the changes that have taken place during the last 75 years. He never consciously hurt anyone and his neighborly spirit was an inspiration to the community in which he lived. He was quiet and reserved, yet enjoyed living, made friends easily and was able to keep them. The happiness and welfare of his daughter, which later included her husband; his deep faith in his God and his fellowman — these things which came to be so important in his every day living made up a life which was fully and richly lived.
Funeral services for Mr. Bartel were conducted on Tuesday afternoon, September 9, 1952, at 2:30 o’clock from the Garden Township Mennonite church, where he was a member. Rev. Victor Graber the pastor of the church, and Rev. J. M. Janzen, a former pastor, were the officiating clergymen. Mrs. Richard Regier of Burrton was the soloist and sang “In The Garden” and “Ich Weisz Einen Strom.” Mrs. Milton Ewy of Halstead was the accompanist and she also played a number of selections.
Honorary casket bearers were Arthur Nicklies, Harry S. Trego, Adolph Bachman, John Neufeld, Theodore E. Rupp, and Floyd Lehman. Casket bearers were his nephew's, Olen Bartel, Roland Bartel, Arnold Hedlund, Ben F. Richardson, Martin Seidell and Weldon Friesen. His final resting place was in the Garden Township Mennonite cemetery of Moundridge with the directors of the Kaufman Funeral Home in charge of funeral arrangements.
