CONTROVERSIAL SENATOR CALLED AWAY IN DEATH

Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy, a highly controversial member of Congress and one of the few ever offcially [sic] reprimanded by his colleagues, died Thursday, May 2, after a brief illness from acute hepatitis. He was 47 years of age.

McCarthy was both praised and condemned for his radical methods in trying to rid the government of Communists. A man broken in spirit and health, his influence was at low ebb in official circles at the time of his death. Catholic funeral services were held Tuesday at Appleton, Wisc., in the church of which he was a member.

McCarthy's death reduced Republican strength in the Senate to 46, as against 49 Democrats.
