EVELYN STUCKY HARMS

Evelyn Stucky Harms, daughter of John D. G. and Sophia (nee Flickner) Stucky, was born on Nov. 20, 1927, near Moundridge, Kansas, where she spent most of her life and received her public and high school education. She attended Bethel College during the year 1946-47.

On May 24, 1942, she was baptized upon confession of her faith and received as a member into the Eden Mennonite church. Until her death she remained a faithful and active member of this church.

On June 13, 1947, she was married to Irvin Harms, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Harms. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Tommy Dean, three and one-half, and infant Barbara Jean, born April 29, 1952, at the Bethel Deaconess hospital. On May 3 she was released from the hospital and returned to her home and family in good health and high spirits. Little Barbara Jean was also in good health.

During the days at home she regained her strength and was able to enter into the family life. On the morning of May 5 she was up for breakfast, herself led in the family devotions and declared that this morning she felt exceptionally good. Her mother helped her with the housework. Her husband was in the field. Her mother had occasion to leave the house for a few minutes to hang some washing on the line; when she returned she found Mrs. Harms on the floor. The doctor was called immediately and her husband rushed to help, but despite every effort to revive her, she did not open her eyes again, nor did she say another word.

Quietly and very suddenly she departed this life, leaving to mourn her departure her husband, two small children, Tommy Dean and Barbara Jean; her parents, John D. G. and Sophia Stucky; two brothers, Milton J. and Elmer M. Stucky; one sister, Elva (Mrs. Floyd Dell) of Seattle, Wash.; her father-in-law and step mother-in-law, Mrs. and Mrs. Leonard O. Harms; her step-grandmother, Anna Harms of Newton; eight sisters-in-law, seven brothers-in-law, many uncles and aunts, and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on May 7, 1952, at 1:30 in the home and at 2:00 p.m. in the Eden Mennonite church with Rev. Peter J. Dyck in charge. Music was given by a men’s quartet in the home and by a men’s chorus in the church.

Burial was made in the cemetery near the Eden church.
