MARGARETHA TOEWS

Margaretha Toews was born in Continiusfeld, S. Russia, in 1880, a daughter of Benjamin and Helena Janz. She was baptized in 1899 and joined the MB Church. In 1903 she married John A. Toews, a widower with three children. Since he was a teacher and preacher as well as Bible School instructor, he was often away from home for extended periods. After nearly 50 years of marriage, he died, and Margaretha outlived him by 20 years.

For the first nine years as a widow she kept house for her brother B. B. Janz in Coaldale. Then she lived with her daughters, first in Winnipeg and then in St. Catharines, Ont. The last four years were spent as an invalid in Tabor Manor, St. Catharines.

Though her life was often hard and she suffered much illness, she was always firm in her faith, always being an example to those around her. She lived to be 92 years of age, and was buried beside her husband in the family plot.

Funeral services were held in Coaldale, Alta., on February 4, with Rev. J.J. Toews as officiating minister. Left to mourn are the following family members and their families: J. B. Toews, Fresno, California, J. J. Toews, Winnipeg, Man., Henry J . Toews, Edmonton, Alta., Elizabeth Toews, Victoria, B.C., Helen Pauls, Clearbrook, B.C., and Lydia Dick, St. Catharines, Ont., as well as many other relatives and friends.
