The accident occurred Saturday, July 9, during a dust storm in the Colby region. Mr. Schmidt, driver of a gasoline transport, stopped his truck along the highway to help the state highway patrolman direct traffic at the scene of an accident when he was struck by a car and knocked to the pavement. He died Tuesday, July 12, at the Colby hospital. Surviving are his wife, the former Ruth Gates of the home near Goessel; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel E. Schmidt of Goessel; and two sisters, Mrs. H. H. Wedel of rural Canton and Mrs. Leland Kirby of Manhattan.
