Airplane Crash Fatal To Wilmore Youths

FUNERAL FOR MELVIN UNRUH AND BROTHER ARLAN HELD JUNE 28

Funeral services were held at Greensburg, Saturday, June 28, for Melvin J. and Arlan Unruh, sons of Joe Unruh of Wilmore, Kansas, who were fatally injured when the plane Melvin was piloting crashed on their father’s farm. Cause of the accident, which happened on Wednesday forenoon, June 25, is believed to have been a too sharp turn at low altitude when the plane was flying in a windward direction.

The parents, who had been away, were prostrate with grief when informed of the tragedy upon their return home. Melvin, 22, a former CPS Smokejumper, was killed instantly, while his 14 year old brother Arlan died several hours later after having been rushed to the Dodge City Hospital.

Since the Greensburg Mennonite church was not large enough to accommodate all relatives and friends who desired to attend, the services were held in the Methodist church. Besides the grief-stricken parents three other children survive.
