In 1949 she came to Hesston (Kan.) College, where she received nurse's training. She accepted a position in the Freeman (S. D.) Community Hospital.

She was married to Raymond Hofer on May 17, 1953 in the Hutterthal Mennonite church. They returned to the Freeman area to spend 26 years together in farming and small business.
