EVELYN J. HOFER

Evelyn Jeanette Hofer was born July 13, 1921, to Jacob L. Hofer Jr. and Anna S. Hofer on a farm near Freeman, S. D. She received her high school diploma from Freeman Academy.

On October 13, 1940, she married Arnold M. Hofer. They farmed south of Bridgewater from 1943 to 1989. They enjoyed farming in spite of its adversities, and the Lord blessed their efforts. In 1989 they retired to a home in Freeman.

Evelyn was baptized July 27, 1941, and became a member of Salem Mennonite Brethren Church. She served faithfully in many capacities, including pianist, Sunday school teacher, midweek class teacher and Women's Missionary society leader. She assisted her husband as a deacon for many years.

She had the gift of hospitality, entertaining many visitors and friends. She especially enjoyed hosting missionaries, ministers and conference leaders. She also had a gift to enjoy beauty, evidenced by her flowers, posters made for special occasions and her decorating ability.

Her life and that of her husband was enriched when they adopted 15-month-old Debra Ann in 1955.

Evelyn enjoyed traveling with her husband. For about 30 years they attended nearly all the Mennonite Brethren district and national conferences, where they became acquainted with many conference ministers, missionaries and leaders. She also accompanied her husband to the Soviet Union to visit the former villages of their grandparents.

Evelyn read the Bible through annually. Her interest in evangelism was evidenced by becoming a founding member of the Freeman Christian Women's Club.

She died July 11, 1997.

She is survived by her husband, Arnold; a daughter, Debbie and husband Lyndon Graf of Marlow, Okla.; three grandchildren; a sister, Marjorie Hofer of Freeman, four brothers, Melvin L. and Kenneth, both of Freeman, Vernon J. of Marion and Merlin of Dolton.
