text of obituary:

Ohio ‘Behalt’ artist dies

Heinz Gaugel (right), the artist who painted “Behalt,” a 265-foot mural depicting Anabaptist/Mennonite history at the Mennonite Information Center in Berlin, Ohio, died Dec. 28 at his home in Fonthill, Ont.

During a memorial service Jan. 7 at the center, Stephen Steiner, president of the center’s board of trustees, said Gaugel “came from outside the Anabaptist circle and seemed to understand the pain and suffering so perfectly and was able to portray it in a profound way.” Gaugel was born in 1927 in Germany. He emigrated to Canada in 1951, moved to Holmes County, Ohio in 1972 and completed “Behalt” in 1992.
