India Hospital Administrator Dies
CHAMPA, India — Amritius Sonwani, Hindi language instructor for General Conference Mennonite missionaries in the late 1940s and former administrator at a GC hospital, died Jan. 10. He was 67.
In 1958 Sonwani joined the nursing staff of Sewa Bhawan Hospital in Jagdeeshpur, a hospital established by the GC mission. He was its nursing superintendent from 1969 to 1983.
A skilled administrator, Sonwani served in a number of Emmanuel Hospital Association facilities after leaving Jagdeeshpur. He was concerned about patients' medical and spiritual needs and was always looking for ways to improve the hospital.
He took a leadership role in the church at Herbertpur. Upon moving to Champa, he was active in one of Champa’s Mennonite congregations, fervently hoping for a reconciliation between the congregations.
He is survived by his wife and two sons of Champa and a daughter of Korba.
