Emily Toevs died Sept. 9, 1994. She was born April 26, 1903, on the Godfrey Ranch northwest of Paso Robles, Calif., to Henry and Marie Claassen.
She was the second of eight children. When she was quite young the family moved to the Willow Creek area where she attended the Summit School. She was active in Willow Creek Mennonite Church and especially loved singing. She was baptized June 8, 1919, by F.F. Jantzen.
On June 12, 1924, Emily married Gus Toevs. They enjoyed each other's company for over 59 years. She was active in First Mennonite Church in Paso Robles with Sunday school teaching, Women’s Missionary Society, choir, Friendship Circle and as a Bible school teacher, as well as hosting visiting missionaries and conference speakers in her home. She enjoyed attending church conferences with Gus, making new friendships and renewing past acquaintances. She was the first president of the Pacific District Women in Mission.
Emily is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Younts, and a son, Robert, both of Paso Robles; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, a brother, Ernest Claassen of Paso Robles; and sisters Bertha Lichti of Paso Robles, Agatha Lichti of Clovis and Catherine Quenzer of Seattle.
