Schowalter, Erwin (1885-1907)
The Mennonite obituary: 8 Aug 1907 p. 6
Birth date: 1885
text of obituary:
Schowalter. — Erwin Schowalter, son of J. P. Schowalter and wife, and a former student at Central Mennonite College, was drowned in the Mississippi river at Burlington, Iowa, on Wednesday, July 31. He was in company with three other young men, who had gone swimming in the river when Erwin was taken with cramps and sank to the bottom before help could reach him. He had been a student at Elliot's Business college until a short time ago, when he found employment with a business in that city. He was respected by all who knew him and left many warm friends besides his parents, one brother and two sisters, to mourn their loss. The body was recovered on Friday morning and brought to Wayland, Iowa, where funeral services were conducted on Sunday afternoon by his pastor, S. M. Musselman, assisted by P. E. Stuckey. Interment was made in the new cemetery north of this town. He was aged 22 years, 6 months and 11 days. The blow is a hard one for the parents and family, somewhat tempered by the deep sympathy shown by the friends in this sad experience.
