HERBERT FUNK

Herbert Funk was born Dec. 31, 1909, near Canada, Kan., the youngest of five children born to Franz N. and Elizabeth Ewert Funk.

He attended Canada Grade School and Hillsboro Academy and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1930. After studying at Bethel College and Kansas State Agricultural College, he worked on the family farm.

On Nov. 24, 1938, he married Elsie Goertz, and they established their home on the farm near Canada. Two years after her death in 1955, he married Rebecca Unruh.

He was baptized by Elder John Plenert on Aug. 28, 1927, and became a member of bruderthal (now Trinity) Mennonite Church, which he served as trustee for many years.

He enjoyed his family and kept contact with a wide circle of friends. He developed a method for binding church bulletins and other publications.

He died of cancer June 7, 1990. Survivors include his wife, Rebecca; three daughters and their husbands, Mary Beth and Marvin Goering of McPherson, Myrna and Stanley Bartel of Manhattan and Rosanne and David Troxel of Lenexa; one sister, Elizabeth Nickel of Hillsboro; a sister-in-law, Edna Funk of North Newton; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 12, 1990, at Trinity Mennonite Church, Hillsboro, Kan., with Heinz and Dotty Janzen officiating. Interment was at Haven of Rest Cemetery, Hillsboro.
