Kansas Couple Killed In Highway Crash
Harper, Kan.—Double funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon, Feb. 3, at the Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church here for N. Ernest and Florence Detweiler, 64 and 63 years of age, who were killed in a highway crash on Jan. 31. Rev. Robert Zehr and Rev. James Detweiler officiated at the services.
The accident occurred on K-42 near Clonmell [sic Clonmel], southwest of Wichita. A state patrol trooper reported that the driver of a semi-truck was unable to stop behind a school bus which had stopped to unload children, and veered into the oncoming lane of traffic. Mr. Detweiler apparently saw the truck and swerved right then slammed on his brakes to avoid hitting the bus and skidded into the path of the truck.
Mr. and Mrs. Detweiler were both natives of Harper and were married here in 1935. Mrs. Detweiler was the former Florence Hostetler. Surviving in their immediate family are three sons, Clinton of Littleton, Colo., Jerry of Goshen, Ind., and Carl of East Glacier Park, Mont.; a daughter, Marjorie Detweiler of Albuquerque, N.M.; seven grandchildren; and brothers and sisters.
