Tornado in Eastern Pennsylvania Leaves One Dead, 5 Injured

Lebanon, Pa.—A tornado ripped through a rural area near Myerstown in eastern Lebanon County the evening of June 18, causing heavy property damage and leaving one dead and five injured.

Thirteen-year-old Joseph Tice was fatally injured when struck by a timber in the Paul Kurtz barnyard where he was helping with some concrete work. Injured were Thomas Tice, Harvey and Aaron Weaver, who also were working at the Kurtz farm, and two Kurtz daughters, Lois and Ellen. Lois, age 10, was hospitalized with broken leg. while the others were treated and released.

At both the Kurtz farm and the nearby Samuel Kauffman farm, the upper sections of the house were torn off and other farm buildings unroofed or damaged. Large groups of neighbors and friends gathered at the two farms on Friday and Saturday to clear away debris and rebuild the roof of the two houses. The twisters also took off part of the roof at the Mennonite parochial school on the Eli Burkholder farm. Lebanon County adjoins Lancaster on the north.
