BENJAMIN MATIS

Benjamin Matis of Coaldale, Alta. passed away on August 12. He was born in Alfons, Poland on May 28, 1915 to Benjamin and Martha (Penner) Matis. Later Robert Foth became his stepfather, after his father pass- ed away. He accepted Christ as his Saviour at age 16 and was baptized into the Mennonite Brethren Church a year later. He married Gertrude Pauls in May 1939. After World War II the couple immigrated to Coaldale, where he worked as a builder. His family remembers him as one who loved life, enjoyed good humor, and was especially fond of music and singing. He is survived by his wife Gertrude; five children and spouses: Richard and Helen, Herbert and Mavis, and Rudy, all of Coaldale, Eric and Sandra of Lethbridge, and Elvira and Albert Penner of Kamloops, B.C.; eight grandchildren, one sister, two step-sisters and two step-brothers.
