SOPHIE CHARLOTTE MARTENS

Sophie Charlotte Martens died Nov. 19, 2007. She was born Jan. 18, 1925, in Zagradovka, Ukraine to Wilhelm and Maria Martens. The family immigrated to Canada in 1925, settling near Sperling, Man., where they experienced the rigors and hardships of pioneer life. As a young girl, Sophie came to faith in Jesus Christ. At 18, she rededicated her life to Christ, was baptized, and accepted into membership at Sperling MB Church. At 19, Sophie enrolled in a dressmaking course and became an accomplished seamstress. In 1946, she married David Wiens and the couple made their home in Kitchener, Ont. Sophie was grateful for family and was a devoted mother. She cherished her church, Kitchener MB, where she served as a deacon and loved to sing in the choir. Sophie also volunteered at the MCC Thrift Shop. Predeceased by David in 1992; 2 brothers; she is mourned by children Beverly (Rick) Biggar, Donald (Shelley), Brian (Wendy), Mary (Bob) Somerville; 7 grandchildren; 1 sister; 5 brothers. The funeral was Nov. 23 at Kitchener MB Church.
