• Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite Church on Thursday afternoon, May 8, for John E. Peters, 81, a lifelong resident of this area. Dr. Albert Epp, the pastor, officiated. Mr. Peters was born at Newton. After his marriage to Bertha Becker at Goessel in 1914 they resided in the Goessel and Peabody communities, moving to Newton in 1953. His first wife died in 1962, and in 1965 he married Mrs. Carrie Jeffries at Newton. She survives, along with three sons, Victor of Wichita, Melvin of Newton, and Elmer of Emporia; three daughters, Mrs. Ervin Foth of Walton, Mrs. Roy E. Fiedler of Wichita, and Mrs. Alvin Dyck of Moundridge; two brothers, Herman and Arthur, both of Walton; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Schroeder of Wamego and Mrs. Herman Janzen of Newton; 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Mr. Peters died May 6 at Bethel Deaconess Hospital.
