Death Claims Former President Truman

Harry S. Truman, the nation's 33rd president, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 26, at Research Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. where for three weeks he had fought a losing struggle for life. He was 88.

In a televised procession early Wednesday afternoon, the body was moved from an Independence, Mo. funeral home to the Truman Library, where it was to lie in state until 11 a.m. Thursday. A private funeral service in the library's auditorium, seating about 250 persons, was scheduled for Thursday afternoon with Rev. John H. Lembcke Jr. of the Trinity Episcopal Church officiating. The place of burial was the library courtyard.

Truman, as vice-president, became president upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945, a few months after Roosevelt had begun his fourth term. He surprised his critics by winning election over Thomas Dewey in 1948.
