Duke of Windsor Buried in England

The Duke of Windsor, who as Edward VIII acceded to the throne of England in 1936 but abdicated before his coronation to marry a divorced American socialite, was buried in private ceremonies June 5 on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

At the service the 75-year-old duchess, the former Wallis Warfield Simpson, sat between Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. For several days previously she had been a royal guest at Buckingham Palace in London — the first time since her marriage to the Duke just 35 years ago that she had been accorded recognition by the royal family.

The Duke, 77 died May 28 in Paris, France where he had been living in exile.
