SARA ELIZABETH HINKLE

Sara Elizabeth Hinkle, oldest child of Jacob and Susie (Brubaker) Hinkle, was born on May 25, 1908 at Harper, Kan. and died on Feb. 10, 1972 at the Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg, Pa. following surgery. She attained the age of 63 years.

At the age of four she was stricken with what was then called "brain fever." With the skilled help of Dr. H. W. Gaume of Harper and a neighbor and pastor of Crystal Springs Mennonite Church, Rev. Jake J. Zimmerman and wife Lizzie, who spent much time caring and praying for Sara, the crisis passed and she learned to walk and talk again. The writer spent the first school vacation helping and playing with her, as I am several years older. In a few years Sara was normal again and able to attend school. She graduated from high school in 1929.

On Nov. 21, 1930 her father and brother Reuben were struck by a train at a crossing in Harper. Her father recovered and is now 89 years old, but Reuben, age 18, died of brain injury.

In 1936 the Hinkle family moved to Port Trevorton, Pa. and lived in her mother's old home until she passed away on July 19, 1967. Sara did house work for others and made many friends. After her mother's death she stayed with her father and these last few years was his constant companion and tenderly cared for him.

She had been a true follower of the Lord since childhood. She was a member of the Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church at Harper, Kan. and later transferred to Susquehanna Mennonite Church at Port Trevorton, Pa.

Surviving in the immediate family are her father; two sisters, Helen and husband Edwin Arnold of Port Trevorton, and Imogene and husband Stanley Eyer of Vero Beach, Fla.; three brothers, Joseph and wife Annabelle, Milford and wife Dottie, and Elmer and wife Audrey.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, Feb. 13, at the Susquehanna Mennonite Church in Port Trevorton with Bishop Allen Kaufman in charge. A cousin, Dora B. Schlagel.
