Lancaster, Pa. — Bishop Henry F. Garber, who was instrumental in launching the first overseas missionary work of the Eastern Mennonite Board of Missions in East Africa, died here Dec. 23 at the age of 80.
Bishop Garber became a member of the mission board in 1921 and served in turn as treasurer, field worker and chairman. He had been an honorary member of the executive committee since 1956. For many years he represented the Lancaster Conference on the Mennonite Central Committee.
A native of this area, he served in the ministry at the Mt. Joy Mennonite Church for 37 years. In his earlier years he was named a Master Farmer.
