OLGA FUNK

Olga Funk of Reedley, CA passed away Feb. 1. She was born May 9, 1898 in Russia. She was the daughter of Gerhart P. and Margerette Remple. Her mother died in an accident. When she was 4 months old, she was adopted by a childless couple, who dedicated her to the Lord's service. Her new father accepted a teaching position in the Caucasus, where he organized a Sunday school for children. One Sunday when she was 4, he told the story of the crucifixion and she imagined Christ saying, "I did this for you." When she was 12, she was convicted of sinfulness and accepted Christ. She was baptized and joined the Mennonite Church in 1914. Her parents preferred she associate with MB young people. She was baptized by immersion and joined the MB Church in June, 1921. She became a teacher. In 1924 the family immigrated to Canada. She became a nurse, serving suffering humanity for 34 years. She graduated from Bethel College Deaconess Nursing School in Newton, KS and from Tabor College in 1948 and studied 1 year at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. She was a supervisor at Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg, while caring for her parents. She moved to B.C. and bought a raspberry farm. In 1959 she moved to San Jose, CA, where she married widower John P. Funk June 28, 1959. After he died in October, 1966, she ministered to lonely people. In California she worked as a private duty nurse in Reedley and Fresno hospitals. She loved to read, studied God's Word in depth and was a much loved Sunday school teacher until resigning in January, 1991. She shared her home with missionaries and friends. She is mourned by her stepson Peter J. Funk of Fresno, 2 step grandchildren and 4 step great-grandsons.
