PETER J. WIEBE

Peter J. Wiebe of Swift Current, Susk. passed away Aug. 16. He was born Feb. 21, 1908 to Jacob and Elizabeth Wiebe in Nikolayevka, Russia. His parents died of typhus shortly after the Russian Revolution. He lived with a step grandmother. In 1924 his uncle Ben Redekop of Herbert, Sask. helped him immigrate to Canada. He lived with his uncle and his grandmother Mrs. Franz B. Redekop at Main Centre, Sask. He attended school to learn English and spent a winter or two at Bible school in a private home. He was baptized June 27, 1927 and joined Main Centre MB Church. At 21 he went to work for his uncle Abram Wiebe in Borden, Sask. Here he married Martha Penner Nov. 18, 1934. They moved to Bournemouth, Sask., where they farmed a partly broken quarter and lived in a house he built from wood earned in exchange for a winter of logging. They moved to Main Centre in 1947, then to Rush Lake, Sask. and Glenbush, Sask. In 1974 they retired to Swift Current, joining Bridgeway Community Church. His hearing problem worsened and his eyes began to fail. He enjoyed gardening, long daily walks, having coffee with other seniors and listening to Bible radio broadcasts and tapes. He had survived many brushes with death: smallpox, goring by a bull, a boil on his throat that almost choked him and a skill saw cut to his head. He finally succumbed to a stroke. Predeceased by 2 sisters, he is survived by his wife; sons Phil of Burnaby, B.C., Jake of Salmon Arm, B.C., Leonard of Regina and Ben of Saskatoon; 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. The funeral was Aug. 20 in Bridgeway Community Church, with Albert Friesen ministering
