AGNETA SCHMIDT

Agneta Schmidt of Clearbrook, B.C. passed away July 19. She was born Sept. 24, 1909 to David and Wilhelmina Schmidt in Wymyschle, Poland. She spent the war years with various families, learning to work hard with joy and to read the New Testament and Psalms. Ps. 62:7 remained a favourite. She returned home, started school and attended church regularly. At 14 she accepted Christ following the visit of a traveling preacher. In 1925 she was baptized by her uncle John Schmidt. She married Henry Schmidt Feb. 2, 1935 in Wymyschle, moving onto a farm. First son Arthur died at 7 weeks and first daughter Bertha at 13 months. Henry was conscripted during World War II and imprisoned afterward. He was released in 1946 and they fled to East Germany. Son Bernie got TB , son Henry had asthma, Bernie recovered miraculously, but daughter Hildegund suddenly died. They escaped to West Germany, where the children had further sicknesses. In 1950 they were able to immigrate to Alberta. In 1951 they moved to Yarrow, B.C., moving to their own farm later that year. In 1971 they joined King Road MB Church in Abbotsford, B.C. In 1973 they sold the farm and moved to Clearbrook. In 1978 they joined Clearbrook MB Church, where they worked on the funeral food committee. She spent her retirement years hosting company and handcrafting blankets, completing a double blanket for each grandchild. She spent her last months reading scripture,. marking I Tim. 4:13 in her Bible. Predeceased by 3 children and 7 brothers and sisters, she is mourned by her husband; children Helga Wiens of Clearbrook, Bernie of Surrey, B.C. and Irma Martens of Snohomish, WA; 9 grandchildren and 1 brother.
