VS Worker from Kansas Victim of Drowning Off Salvador Coast

Hutchinson, Kan. — A Thanksgiving Day tragedy in Salvador, Central America claimed the life of 20-year-old Floyd Miller of rural Hutchinson, a voluntary service worker in that country under Amish Mennonite Aid. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Enos J. Miller of Route 1. According to the account of the tragedy received here, Floyd and three other AMA volunteers went wading in the ocean while on a Thanksgiving Day outing at the beach. They were in waist-deep water when a large wave swept all four farther out to sea.

One of the four was able to return to shore, after which fishermen and other natives rescued two others. However, the Miller youth could not be found. His body was washed ashore on Saturday, less than a mile away.

The burial of the young man was to take place at 1 p.m. Monday at San Icidro [sic Isidro], Salvador, and at the same time a memorial service was held at the Center Amish Mennonite Church near here.

Young Miller had gone to Salvador in May of this year to assist in agricultural development projects carried on there by Amish Mennonite Aid. Besides his parents, he is survived by brothers, Daniel and David, and a sister Ruby, of the home; Vernon of rural Hutchinson, and Alva of Maumee, Ohio.

Friends from Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Oklahoma and Kansas attended the memorial service near here. Amos Nisly of the Center congregation was in charge, assisted by W. W. Wagler and David Miller. Also here to take part in the service was Andrew Hershberger of Virginia, who succeeded his brother, the late Bishop J. J. Hershberger, as secretary-treasurer of Amish Mennonite Aid.
