Mrs. Aganetha Graves

Mrs. John Isaak Graves, daughter of Dietrich Bartel, Russia, was born on March 31, 1877. Her parents were Christians and members of the Mennonite Brethren Church.

Her father was a farmer and a lay minister who migrated with his family to the United States and settled in Kansas.

She was married to John Isaac Graves on August 29, 1897.

To this marriage were born seven children after which the family moved to Canada in 1910, where three more children were born to the parents making it ten children in all. In 1919 the family returned to the United States and settled down in California.

On August 19, 1937, on her 40th anniversary she experienced the deep sorrow of losing her husband through death. Now as widow she lived with her children who cared for her in their homes until she grew weaker and finally bedridden in 1950. Her interesting life waned and she longed to go to her heavenly home. Although her speech failed her she was a testimony for the Lord and very much concerned about the welfare of her children.

On August 20, 1954, she peacefully took leave of her earthly body and went to be with the Lord.

She was a consecrated Christian and a dear mother, who had accepted the Lord as her Saviour when she was but a young child and she never lost faith. In sickness and in health, in sorrow and in joy, in prosperity or poverty she never ceased to praise God for His infinite mercy and bounty.

Of her children the oldest son, John preceded her in death in the year of 1916 at the age of 17 years. So did the youngest daughter Alice who was born in 1917 and lived but one month.

She is survived by eight of her children, Richard, Sarah, Agnes, Ella, Henry, David, Arthur and William, two of her sisters Kate Davis and Mrs. Sarah Franz, 27 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren and many relatives and friends. We mourn but not as such that have no hope, but have the heartfelt assurance that we shall meet her again. The Family.

California, Los Angeles, 7. September 1954.

English translation:

Los Angeles, California, Sept. 7, 1954.

… Tuesday, August 24th, was the funeral of sister Aganetha Graeves, who died on August 20 at a Christian home near Baldwin Park. In the last while she had to be attended. The funeral was held at the First Baptist Church in Montebello, where brother W. Rood spoke on the 23rd Psalm. The brethren formerly resided in Los Angeles, and the brother died in 1937. After the death of her husband, the sister probably spent most of her time with her children. She was buried at the Inglewood Cemetery.
