Peter P. Redekopp

Peter P. Redekopp of Winkler, Man. passed away Feb. 5. He was born Apr. 3, 1887 to Peter and Katerina Redekopp in Gruenfeld, Russia. By age 20 he was a member of Blumenort Mennonite Church. He married Helena Schellenberg Oct. 4, 1907. They farmed for 7 years. He was drafted in World War I, serving as a cook, carpenter, purchase agent and orderly. During this time, he reevaluated his spiritual state and committed his life to the Lord. They immigrated to Winkler, Man. in 1923 and were welcomed by strangers, the Johan Enns family, the Isaac Wiens family of Rosenbach and the Gerhard Friesen family in Gnadenthal in 1924. They decided to practise the same kind of hospitality and welcomed many immigrant families. In 1929 they joined the MB church. He served gladly at whatever task needed doing, particularly enjoying his work as a deacon. In 1954 they sold the farm and moved to Winkler, joining Winkler MB Church, where he continued as a deacon. He bought land and continued farming until 1960. At 73 he started a bookbinding business in his basement. He retired from this and from driving at 95. They moved to Salem Home in 1984. Helena died in August, 1985. Since then, he prayed that the Lord would take him in his sleep, and that prayer was answered. He remained a strong supporter of MB Communications and MCC, but his main concern was the spiritual well being of his family. Predeceased by 1 son, 1 grandson and 1 great-grandson, he is mourned by his children Helen Thiessen of Winkler, Peter of Winkler, John of Winkler, Jacob Peter of Winnipeg, Nettie Baerg of Kitchener, Ont., Tina Martynes of Winkler and Anne Braun of Dawson Creek, B.C.; 21 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren and 2 sisters. The funeral was Feb. 8 in Winkler MB Church, with Ron Braun and John Stoesz ministering.
