Aged Teacher, Pastor, Called Away in Death

Funeral services for Dr. Gustav H. Enss, 80, a former resident of this community, were held Saturday afternoon at the First Mennonite Church, conducted by Rev. John Thiessen. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.

Dr. Enss died Wednesday, Nov. 10, of a coronary attack at Columbia, Mo. where he and Mrs. Enss had resided at the home of their children.

Born at Samara, Russia, April 13, 1885, Dr. Enss came to America with his family in 1915 and accepted a teaching position at Bethel College. He then served as pastor of the Hopefield Mennonite Church near Moundridge, taught for a time at Hesston College, and at Goshen (Ind.) College from 1928-34. Later the family located in Michigan, where he held several Baptist pastorates.

Besides the education he received in Russia, he attended the University of Berlin in Germany, Kansas University, Lawrence, Kan., Chicago and Northwestern Universities, and in 1935 was awarded the doctor of theology degree by Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Survivors include his wife, the former Amy Evelyn Greaves (Suderman) [sic Sudermann] of Sheffield, England; two sons, George Sudermann of Mena, Ark., and Jacob Sudermann of Elkhart, Ind.; eight daughters, Mrs. Mary Hipple of West Chester, Pa.; Mrs. H. J. (Joanna) Andres of Newton, Mrs. Jim (Justine) Dowyer [sic Bowyer] of Orange, Calif., Mrs. George (Amy) Packshot [sic Preckshot] of Columbia, Mo., Miss Frieda Enss of St. Louis, Mrs. Ralph (Ruth) Blocksma of Grand Rapids, Mich., Mrs. Earl (Haidie) Stover of Souderton, Pa., Mrs. Harold (Vera) Kemp of Wilmington, Del.; 23 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

All of the children except the oldest son, George, and the oldest daughter, Mrs. Hipple, were able to attend the funeral on Saturday.
