Churchill Funeral Saturday In St. Paul's Cathedral
Funeral services for Sir Winston Churchill, arranged for next Saturday in London's famous St. Paul Cathedral, are likely to be the most elaborate in British history.
The 90-year-old British statesman, hailed as one of the most prominent figures of modern times, died last Sunday after having been in a coma for nine days as result of a stroke.
The array of world leaders attending the services is expected to surpass the attendance at the funeral of the late President Kennedy in 1963.
President Johnson, who had been confined to Bethesda Naval Hospital because of a severe cold said he is planning to fly to London for the funeral if his health permits. Others who have announced their intention to attend are Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, French President Charles de Gaulle, and West German Chancellor Ludwig Erhard.
Burial will be in a country churchyard at Blandon Village, outside London, near the graves of his mother and father, Lord Randolph Churchill, who died 70 years earlier, to the day, also in London.
