CORNELIUS H. SCHMIDT

Cornelius H. Schmidt, son of Jacob S. and Sarah Hiebert Schmidt, was born near Goessel, Kan. on Jan. 31, 1882. He was the oldest of 10 children, seven of whom preceded him in death. He grew up and was educated in the Emmenthal community.

Upon confession of his faith in Christ Jesus his Savior, he was baptized on May 18, 1902, by Elder Peter Balzer and received into the fellowship of the Alexanderwohl Church. When the Tabor church was organized in 1909, he became a charter member and gave his faithful support to its various programs throughout his life. He was especially interested in Christian education and missions.

He was united in marriage to Katie Voth on June 20, 1906, in the Alexanderwohl Church, and 58 years were spent together on a farm in the Walton community. Five sons and five daughters were born to this union.

In April of 1964 he suffered a light stroke. On July 3 he fell in his home and sustained a broken hip. Although he survived the resulting surgery, the Lord called him home the following morning on July 7, 1964. One daughter, Hilda, Mrs. Dave Schroeder, preceded him in death on April 20, 1963.

He leaves to mourn his departure and to remember his life, his wife, Katie; five sons: Clarence C., Ferndale, Wash., Charles W., Hesston, Kan., Harold D., Kingman, Kan., Milton, Walton, Kan., and Earl A., Pawnee Rock, Kan.; four daughters: Irma, Mrs. John Schmidt, Ferndale, Wash., Elsie, Mrs. Arnold Zielke, Newton, Kan., Martha, Mrs. Otto Unruh, rural Newton, and Edna, Mrs. Elmer Schrag, Kingman, Kan.; 27 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; a brother Phillip, Walton, Kan., one sister, Mrs. H. F. Voth, rural Newton, and an adopted sister, Mrs. Marie Warnke Derksen of Goessel. — The Family.
