At the age of 14 she was baptized and joined the Mennonite Brethren Church. She attended Tabor College and taught school for several years in Kansas. In 1926 she moved to Colorado Springs where she became a member of the Presbyterian church and worked as a practical nurse at Sunny Rest Sanatarium.
