Joel P. Schwartz, 57, an Amish farmer of near Centerville, Mich. was killed last week and his wife critically wounded by a 21-year-old youth who had been refused permission to date their 16-year-old daughter. The two were shot by Carlyle Alan Schragg who lives on an adjoining farm. The shooting reportedly occurred after the parents had rejected the would-be suitor because of religious differences.

Services in Michigan For Shooting Victim

Centerville, Mich. — A largely attended funeral too place at the Dan. D. Bontrager residence near here on April 9 as services were held for Joel P. Schwartz, 57, who was the victim of a shooting at his farm home April 5.

Mrs. Schwartz, 57, was critically injured but at last report was recovering.

Both were shot by Carlyle Allen Schragg, 21, a neighbor youth who had been rebuffed in his efforts to date 16-year-old Jean Schwartz. He came to the Schwartz farm with a .22 automatic rifle, found Schwartz working in the hog pen, and shot him four times.

Schragg then went to the house where he shot Mrs. Schwartz in the chest. Though critically injured, she tried to take the weapon away from him and in the ensuing tussle the gun discharged twice, striking Schragg in the abdomen and one leg. He was hospitalized, but his injuries were not serious.
