Newton and Vicinity

— Tragedy stalked Harvey County roads over the Memorial Day week end as five persons were killed and two others seriously injured in two separate crashed. On Saturday morning cars driven by Mrs. Delbert Shive, 17, of Burrton and Willard Ray Schrag, Jr., 17, of Route 2, Halstead collided at a country road intersection southeast of Burrton. Fatally injured were Mrs. Shive’s seven-month-old son, Michael, her mother, Mrs. Joe Steffen, 61, of Burrton, and John Leroy Schrag, 10, who was riding with his brother. Mrs. Shive suffered a broken leg and ribs, and Willard Schrag sustained a broken back. All of the victims were taken to the Halstead Hospital. Funeral services for the Schrag boy were held Monday afternoon at the Burrton Mennonite Church, with Rev. G. G. Yoder officiating. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willard N. Schrag, two brothers and two sisters. On Sunday evening a teen-age boy and girl from Hutchinson were killed instantly when their car rammed into the side of a speeding Santa Fe passenger train at the crossing about one mile south of the Twin Bridges.
