BENJAMIN APPEIT

Benjamin Appelt was born in Poland on August 5, 1898 and as a y outh, in 1914, migrated to Canada. He settled firs t on a farm at Spruce Grove, Alb erta. Because he was crippled he took up th e saddlery and shoemaking profes sion -a nd later watch repairing and jewellery seiling. In 1937 he was baptized upon his confession of faith and accepted into the Baptist Church at Onaway, Alberta . In 1938 he moved to Morden where he soon found fellowship in the Mennonite Brethren Church. He was married to Kati e Boldt on September 26, 1943, a union which was blessed with two children, Alhert and Doreen. During their life together, he and his wife experienced many blessings as w ell as some difficult trials. In 1965 he suffered a severe stroke whi ch left him incapacitated and hospitalized despite all efforts and the 'constant care of doctors . He remained clear of mind, however, and understood well what was said to him and many times responded to scriptures and prayers which were spoken to him with a clear Amen. He passed away at the Morden Hospital on January 27. He is survived by his wife, Katie Appelt; his son, Albert, and wife of Morden; and his daughter, Doreen, of Morden (now of Bogota, Colombia); two brothers, Edward of Edmonton and Emil of Osoys, B.C.; and two sisters , Elsie and Wanda, both of Osoys . The funeral was conducted in the Morden MB Church on January 31 with Walter Janzen, the pastor, ministering.
