JOHN PETER BERGMANN
John P. Bergmann of Virg'i'l, ont'ario, passed away 'in the St. Catha'rines Genera'i Hospita'i on May 5. He was born on July 15, 1888 ,in Ladekopp, South Russ'ia. "There he spent his 'chi,ldhood 'and aodoI es'cent years. Before entering the forestry service, ,as a y'outh, 'he made his lI importantexperience with Ohr,ist 'a'nd was converted. From then on his a'im was ,to 'serve ,his Ma'ster. The medica'i CO'fPS ,in which he served during t he First Wo'rld War 'and tthe revo'lu1:ion 'broug,ht many hardships but 'a'iso gave him the o pportunity to minister to ,his fellowmen. He was ma'rried to' Maria Enns ,in 1921, a union which was blessed with five chi,ldren, two of whom died ,in ,infancy. In 1924 the family 'left Huss'ia and establ,ished a new home 'in Hochfeld, Manito'ba. Theyl'ived there for 11 yea'rs, moving from there to Pe'Plar PO'inll:, Man. In 1941 the fami,ly moved Ito Ontario and lived near N'iagara-on-the-Lake. Later .they retired to VirgiL Mr. Bergmann 'beg'an to 'lose his eyeS'ig'ht in 'his later years and f'fOm the summer of 1958 he was 1:otai'ly Ib1 lind. His wife and two daughters eften read .to ,him and ,it was a greall: bless'ing for him to recall the many B'ible verses and hymns whi,ch he had earlier commit,ted to memory. In 1968 the Lord too'k his wilfe ,home and two years later, a~er several mont hs of ilines's, he followed her. He leaves 10 mourn, two daughters, Maf't1ha and Ma·ry, of V,irg'i,l; a son, WaIter and ,his wife, Hal'en, of N'iagara-on-theLake; five grandchild ren; a brother, Abram, of Steinbach, Man.; and a, steps'ister, Tina Rempel, o,f Winnipeg. Rev. John G. Baerg and Rev. George Wichert ministered at the funeral which was 'held ,in the Virgil Mennonite Brethren Church 'on May 8.
