REV. ISAAC LOEWEN

Isaac Loewen was born on December 31, 1896 ,in the viJlage of Lichtcnall, Molotschna (South Russ'ia), where his father, Jakob Loewen, was a teacher, His elementary schooling was obtained in Lichtenau, Altenau and Fuerstenau. Later he attended high school in Halbstadt. At the age of 14 he found peace in the Lord. Two years later he was baptized upon his confession of faith and became a member of the Rueckenau Mennonite Brethren Church. Already early in IHe the Lord called him (nto the ministry of the Word. Whi'le ,in medical service dur,ing the First World 'War, he worked with H. Suckau among the recruits near Moscow. As a result of the war, he came to the adessa region in 1919, where he ministered in the German villages until 1944. an May 14, 1922 he was married to Elizabeth Ohlhauser. Since they could not return to the Molotschna, they joined the Baptist congregat'ion in Alexanderfeld. The Lord gave them the gift of one son. During the Second World War, they came first to Poland, then to Germany. At the request of a group of refugees, he was 'Ordained as a minister in 1948 by Rev, Gustav Ratzlaff. In the same year, they emigrated to Canada, where with the exception of five years in St. Catharines, they made their home in Virgil, antario. In 1961 it pleased the Lord to permi,! him to suffer a cerebral hemorrhage which resulted incomplete para:lysis of his left side, He passed away suddenly on April 24, 1969 at the age of 72. The funeral service was held in the Virgil Church on April 26, with Rev. J.G. Baerg and Rev. Gerhard Epp minis,tering. He leaves to mourn his pass,ing his wife, Elizabeth; one son, Vi'ctor with wife Marian; three grandchildren, Karen, Donald, and Lorelei; three brothers and one sister.
